Inna lillahi wa Inna ilayhi rajioon (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) is a Quranic verse number 156 mentioned in para number 2, Surah Al Baqarah. This Quranic phrase is usually recited by Muslims when they hear the news of someone who has died. People also utter this phrase when they experience a tragedy. 

Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi rajioon (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون)‎, also recognized as (ٱسْتِرْجَاع‎), a Quranic order for believers. A Muslim is encouraged to be patient upon receiving the news of a loved one’s death. A hadith encourages us to utter the words of Istirja, Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon. The Prophet (PBUH) also said, “Allah says, ‘When I take the prized one from this world of one of my believing worshippers, and when that believing worshipper then seeks reward from me (for that calamity), there is no other reward for him except Paradise.’

Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi raji’un (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) may also be used in any sort of risky situations. Thus, Muslims use Inna lillahi (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) more frequently for condolences. 

Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi raji’un in Arabic

Inna lillahi wa Inna ilayhi rajioon is mostly recited in Arabic. So, in Arabic Inna lillahi wa Inna ilayhi rajioon is written as,

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّ إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

This complete Quranic verse is,

الذين إذا أصابتهم مصيبة قالوا۟ إنا لله وإنا إليه راجعون‎

It means,  ‘Those who, when a trouble visits them, they say, ‘Verily we belong to Allah, and verily to Him, we will have to return.’

When to Say Inna lillahi wa inallah-e-raji’oon 

First and foremost, it is necessary to understand that saying Innalillahiwainnailaihirojiun (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) is not confined to reciting upon receiving death news of a person. However, it can be uttered in any situation when you are confronted with some sort of distress or calamity.

Imam Muslim narrates; 

Hadhrat Salma stated that she heard Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) saying, “a Muslim who recites Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi rajioon (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) is never put into distress and Allah compensate him for the endured misery.” (Sahih Muslim)

Imam Qartbi narrated in his Tafseer that once the lantern of Prophet (peace be upon him) went off. And Prophet (peace be upon him) recited  Inna lillahi wa inallah-e-raji’oon (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) upon this. It was asked if it was also any sort of distress or affliction. Prophet (PBUH) said, 

If a Muslim faces any discomfort caused by everything can be regarded as an affliction. (Tafseer al Qurtubi)

Innalillahiwainnailaihirojiun Meaning

Most of the time, we recite the Quranic verses without understanding and knowing the real meanings. Thus, if we deeply look upon the meaning of Innalillahiwainnailaihirojiun, we will find great explanations and understandings. As Quran says;

And to Allah belongs the endowment of the heavens and the earth’ (Al Imran: 180)

Here is the meaning of every single word,

Inna:  meaning Truly, Indeed, surely, verily ‘we’. 

Lillahi:  We belong to Allah.

Wa Inna: Wa means ‘and’; Inna means ‘indeed, we’

Ilayhi: means ‘towards Him’.

Rajioon: means ‘Return’.

English Translation of Inna Lillahiwa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon 

Inna lillahi wa inallah-e-raji’oon (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) can be translated in the English language as,

‎”Indeed, we belong to Allah and we will have to return to Him.” or

We belong to Allah and Him we shall return”. (Al-Baqarah, 156)

On the occasion of the death of His (peace be upon Him) son, Ibrahim’s death, Prophet (peace be upon him) words were,

Our eyes are filled with tears and hearts with grief, but we say nothing with lips except what pleases Allah, Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi rajioon(Bukhari)

Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon Transliteration

There are various variations in the transliteration spellings of Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi rajioon (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون). There is not anyone correct written version of its transliteration. Thus, the English transliteration of Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi raji’un (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) can be;

  1. Inna lillahi wa Inna ilayhi rajioon.
  2. Inna lillahi wa Inna ilaihi rajiun. 
  3. Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.
  4. Inna lillahi wa inallah rajioon
  5. innalillahiwainnailaihirojiun
  6. ina Lilah waina Allah rajiun
  7. Inna lillahi wa inallah-e-raji’oon

These are commonly used transliterations. You can use any of these to pronounce Innalillahiwainnailaihirojiun (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون).

When Holy Prophet (PBUH) Recited Istirja

Holy Prophet (PBUH) has recited Inna lillahi wa Inna ilayhi rajioon at four places. So, why are they? Let’s learn the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH);

  1. When a thorn picks you, then recite Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi raji’un.
  2. When a mosquito, recite the name of your Lord by becoming of the patient’s one.
  3. When your light extinguishes, then recite istirja. 
  4. When your shoelace snaps or tears, then recite istirja.

Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi raji’un Full Dua

A Hadith narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 

There is no Muslim who is oppressed with a tragedy and says that Allah has encouraged, Inna lillahi wa Inna ilayhi rajioon, Allahumma ajirni fi museebati wakhluf li khayran minha (إِنّا للهِ وَإِنَا إِلَـيْهِ رَاجِِعُـونَ ، اللهُـمِّ اْجُـرْني فِي مُصِـيبَتي، وَاخْلُـفْ لِي خَيْـراً مِنْـها). So Allah will recompense him with better than it.

The Effects of Inna lillahi 

Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi rajioon are not habitual or ritual words. Thus, don’t let these words be a statement. A person must be mindful and reflect when reciting this profound dua.

Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi raji’un (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) is full dua that reminds us we return to Allah on the day of judgment and everything around us belongs to Him. every single thing on earth shall taste death. This dua urges us towards virtues upon which every believer shall be rewarded.

Innalillahiwainnailaihirojiun Urdu Translation

It is the perennial truth that everyone will have to die one day. This is the universal truth. As the Quran says; 

“Wherever you may be, death will overhaul you, even if you are within towers of majestic manufacture.” (4:78)

Thus, Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) is the most common Quranic term used as dua. Muslims all over the world, of all languages, use Inna lillahi wa Inna ilayhi rajioon (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون). So, the Urdu translation of Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi raji’un (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) is written as;

بے شک ہم اللہ کیلئے ہیں اور ہمیں اسی کی طرف لوٹنا ہے۔

Inna Lillahiwa Inna Ilayhi Raji’oon in Hindi

Whenever we are in a bad situation, we should comfort ourselves with Inna lillahi wa Inna ilayhi rajioon. True believers utter this dua when they face any loss, challenge, trial, hardships, or adversities. They believe that they belong to Allah and He does what He wills.

The Hindi translation of Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi rajioon (إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُون) is written as,

हम अल्लाह के हैं और उसी की ओर हम लौटेंगे। 

In Hindi, we can pronounce as,

Ham Allah ke hain aur usi ki taraf laut kr jany waly hain.

Thus, you can recite Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon in any language when you are facing discomfort and distress. It is necessary to understand that saying Inna lillahi is not just a statement but a prayer.
