Shukran, شكراً is an Arabic word that is common especially among Arabs when they want to express gratitude to others. Shukrn is a unique and beautiful expression of gratitude in the Arabic language that is usually said when someone gets helped by another person.

Shukran in Arabic

‘Shukrn’ basically an Arabic word that comes from شكر. It means “thankfulness, gratitude”. Shukrn in the Arabic language is “شكرا”. 

Shukrn in the Arabic language is pronounced as “shuk-ran”. 

There are many other variations of the word Shukrn in Arabic. For example:

• Shukran lak (شكرا لك), Thanks to you.
• Shukran jazeelan (شكرا جزيلا), Thank you so much.
• Shukran Kathiran (شكراكثيرا), Thanks a lot/ Thank you so much.
• Shukran jazeelan lak (شكرا جزيلا ), Thanks a lot/ Thank you very much.

What does Shukran Habibi mean?

‘Shukrn Habibi’, in Arabic ‘شكرا حبيبي’, means “thanks, my love”.

However, Habibi / habibti are the most common expressions. They don’t imply a romantic meaning among speakers. Habibi is used with a broader concept. It is mostly used with a friendly meaning.

For example;

Thank you dear for your kindness, (شكرا لك حبيبي على لطفك).

Shukrn Habibi could causally be used as Thank you, dear. ‘Habibi’ is a masculine form, but most of the time it is used for both males and females as an endearing term. 

Arabs use ‘Shukrn Habibi’ a lot. شكرا حبيبي means ‘thank you my love’ or ‘thank you, dear’. Arabs say شكرا حبيبي to their mates, friends, and sometimes strangers too. 

When Habibi is used with Shukrn that doesn’t mean the one who says شكرا حبيبي loves the person in front of him/her. It may sometimes use to show more gratitude with respect.

Shukrn Habibi شكرا حبيبي can not be used in a formal situation. For example, when you are with your boss.

Similar ways to say Shukran

There is not only one way to express gratitude to an appreciable person. However, there are many other similar ways to say thanks. Sometimes these ways use to say thanks in formal situations and sometimes to express love and respect.

2. Memnon (ممنون), very grateful/ very thankful.

8. Bia-tshakarik (بِاتْشَكَّرِك), I’m thanking you.
9. Mashkoor (مَشْكُور), worthy of thanks.
10. Mutashakker (مُتَشَكِّر), I’m all thanks to you.
11. Shakirun lak (شَاكِرٌ لك), I’m thankful for you.
12. Mumtanun lak ( مُمْتَن لك), I’m obliged to you.

How to say Shukran in Urdu?

As ‘Shukrn’ is an Arabic word it mostly uses by Arabs. If someone wants to say ‘thanks’ in the Urdu language, you’ll say  “Shukriya”. 

Shukriya is similar to the Arabic expression ‘Shukrn’. The written version of Shukriya in the Urdu language is (شکریہ). Shukria ‘شکریہ’ is also used in the sense of thanks to express gratefulness for kind acts.

How to Say Shukran in Hindi?

Shukria (شکریہ) is not a Hindi word. There is a different expression in the Hindi language if you want to express thanks to someone who did a favor to you. 

You’ll say “dhanyavaad” if you want to say someone “thanks” who knows the Hindi language. The word in the Hindi language will be written as ‘धन्यवाद’. 

How to Respond to Shukran?

There are many ways to respond to ‘Shukran’. It is Sunnah to respond to ‘Shukran’. For example;

• Afwan (عفوًا), welcome

Afwan is an alternate of ‘welcome’ that can be said in response to ‘Shukran’. Afwan has two meanings depending upon the situation. One is ‘not at all’ and the other meaning is ‘you are welcome’.

• Fi khidmatik dayman (في خدمتك دائمًا), Always at your service
• Min diwaei saruri (من دواعي سروري), it is my pleasure
• La aliyk (لاعليك), do not worry
• Alaa alrahab walsse (على الرحب والسّعة), you are welcome
• La tashkar a’la wajib (لا شكر على واجب), no thanks, it’s my duty
• Ahlan wa sahlan (أهلا و سهلا), welcome

Difference Between Shukran and Ashkurak

‘Shukrn’ and ‘Ashkurak’ both have originated from the same word شكر which means “thanks”. ‘Shukran’ also means ‘thanks’ but ‘Ashkurak’ means ‘I thank you’. 

‘Ashkurak’ is written as (أَشْكُرُكَ) in Arabic. أَشْكُرُ is the present tense first-person form in Arabic. You can add an object/ another person using pronouns. 

For example; Adding كَ for masculine makes أَشْكُرُكَ. Similarly adding كِ you get أَشْكُرُكِ for the feminine.

Mostly, the last syllable doesn’t get pronounced effectively so it becomes أَشْكُرُك. Then there is no identification of gender.

‘Ashkurak’ gives a more sincere meaning than ‘Shukrn’. There is gender identification in ‘Ashkurak’. technically, Shukrn شكرا is a noun that means ‘thanks’, and ‘Ashkurak’ اشكرك, is a verbal sentence that means ‘I thank you.
